Dividing Integers

The rules for multiplying integers are very similar to dividing integers. That means, if you know how to multiply integers, you most likely know how to divide.

Remember these simple rules when dividing integers:

  • if the signs of the two integers are the same, the quotient is positive
  • if the signs of the two integers are different, the quotient is negative

Examples with the SAME sign:

\(\left( { + 12} \right) \div \left( { + 4} \right) = 3\)

\(\left( { - 56} \right) \div \left( { - 7} \right) = 8\)

Examples with DIFFERENT signs:

\(\left( { + 18} \right) \div \left( { - 6} \right) =  - 3\)

\(\left( { - 54} \right) \div \left( { + 9} \right) =  - 6\)
